Jaishankar to Meet Bangladeshi Counterpart Amid Efforts to Recalibrate Bilateral Ties

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to hold talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Khalilur Rahman in New Delhi on Tuesday, as both sides seek to reinforce diplomatic engagement and address evolving regional challenges.

Rahman, who arrived in the national capital on April 7 for a three-day visit, is also expected to meet key Indian officials, including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

The visit marks the first by a Bangladeshi minister to India since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government assumed office in February, signalling a renewed phase of diplomatic outreach between the two neighbours.

Discussions between Jaishankar and Rahman are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral ties, enhancing economic cooperation, and addressing regional and global developments. The meeting comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly in West Asia, where the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran continues to draw international concern.

Strained Relations and Efforts at Stabilisation

India–Bangladesh relations experienced strain following the political transition in Dhaka, where a government led by Muhammad Yunus came to power after the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina administration amid widespread anti-government protests.

Subsequent reports of violence against minority communities in Bangladesh drew strong reactions from New Delhi, contributing to diplomatic unease between the two countries.

However, recent engagements indicate efforts to stabilise ties. India was represented at the oath-taking ceremony of Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, following the BNP’s decisive victory in the parliamentary elections.

Both nations have reiterated the importance of dialogue and diplomacy, advocating de-escalation and adherence to international law, particularly in the context of ongoing global conflicts.

The upcoming high-level talks are expected to play a key role in shaping the next phase of India–Bangladesh relations.
