Narendra Modi on Monday accused the Indian National Congress of echoing Pakistan’s narrative during India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, alleging that the opposition undermined the morale of the armed forces at a critical juncture.
Addressing an election rally in Barpeta, Assam, ahead of the April 9 Assembly polls, the Prime Minister claimed that the Congress had repeatedly aligned itself with positions favourable to Pakistan. Referring to Operation Sindoor, he said Indian forces had acted decisively, forcing Pakistan to retreat within hours.
“Even during Operation Sindoor, our forces compelled Pakistan to surrender swiftly. However, Congress echoed narratives that were in line with Pakistan’s position,” he said.
Allegations of “Pakistan Connect”
Modi further alleged a long-standing pattern of the opposition mirroring narratives advanced by India’s adversaries.
“Congress has consistently encouraged Pakistan’s line of thinking. During Operation Sindoor, it repeated the same narrative being pushed by Pakistan. This ‘Pakistan connect’ of Congress leaders has existed for years,” he stated.
He also asserted that statements made by Congress leaders weaken India’s global standing and embolden hostile forces. According to the Prime Minister, the opposition has historically questioned the achievements of the armed forces, including during surgical and air strikes.
Armed Forces and OROP Reference
The Prime Minister criticised the Congress over the implementation of the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme, accusing it of neglecting the welfare of military personnel.
“Congress kept our soldiers away from One Rank One Pension. Our government has prioritised the welfare of the armed forces,” he said.
Infiltration Issue in Assam
Targeting the opposition on the issue of illegal immigration, Modi alleged that the Congress was attempting to shield infiltrators in Assam.
“Congress is openly supporting infiltrators. Should they be sent back or not? The party is opposing action against illegal occupation and even proposing laws that would penalise those who raise the issue,” he said.
He added that the BJP government remains committed to safeguarding the interests of indigenous communities and maintaining peace in the state.
Welfare Measures and Farmer Support
Highlighting his government’s record, Modi contrasted support extended to farmers under the BJP-led administration with that of the previous Congress-led government.
“In the 10 years prior to 2014, paddy farmers received around ₹4 lakh crore as MSP. In the decade since, our government has provided nearly ₹16 lakh crore,” he said.
Referring to the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, he noted that farmers in Assam had received nearly ₹7,500 crore under the scheme.
Political Criticism and Election Outlook
The Prime Minister also criticised the Congress leadership, accusing it of lacking long-term developmental vision and focusing on short-term projects prone to corruption.
Predicting electoral success, he said the BJP-led alliance would return to power in Assam and took a swipe at the Congress leadership, referring to them as “naamdaars” (dynastic leaders).
Parliament Session and Women’s Representation
Modi also referred to a special session of Parliament scheduled from April 16, urging political parties to support legislation aimed at enhancing women’s representation.
“We are working to ensure greater participation of women in governance and urge all parties to support this initiative unanimously,” he said.
Campaign Schedule Ahead of Polls
According to Press Trust of India, the Prime Minister is scheduled to address additional rallies in Barpeta, Hojai, and Dibrugarh in support of BJP candidates.
This marks his second visit to Assam during the current campaign season, following earlier rallies on April 1.
Polling for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly will be held on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.
