Bishkek, April 28, 2026: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday reiterated India’s uncompromising stance against terrorism while addressing the Defence Ministers’ Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Bishkek.
Emphasising the shifting contours of the global security environment, Singh noted that the role of the SCO has become increasingly critical amid rising geopolitical fragmentation. “Today, the role of the SCO becomes even more important as the global environment appears fragmented, with differences more pronounced than ever before,” he said.
His remarks came during high-level deliberations among defence leaders of SCO member states on regional security dynamics, counter-terrorism cooperation, and the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
In a firm message on terrorism, Singh referred to the recent Pahalgam incident, describing it as an event that “shook the entire humanity.” He underscored India’s response through Operation Sindoor, asserting that it demonstrated the country’s resolve and operational reach. “Through Operation Sindoor, we have shown that terrorists cannot escape, no matter where they are,” he said.
Calling for a unified and consistent global approach, the Defence Minister cautioned against selective responses to terrorism. “We should not ignore state-sponsored cross-border terrorism. There is no place for double standards in this matter,” he emphasised.
Bilateral engagements on the sidelines
On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, Singh held key bilateral discussions with regional counterparts, including China’s Defence Minister Dong Jun and Russia’s Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, as part of India’s broader diplomatic outreach on regional security and stability.
Marking the commencement of his official engagements, Singh paid tribute to fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at Victory Square. His visit began with a ceremonial reception reflecting traditional Kyrgyz hospitality. Upon arrival, he was also welcomed by members of the Indian diaspora, highlighting enduring people-to-people ties between the two nations.
SCO context and India’s role
The SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting is being held against the backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly developments in West Asia. Member nations are expected to explore strategies to address the impact of ongoing conflicts while strengthening cooperation in defence and counter-terrorism.
The SCO—comprising countries such as India, China, Russia, Pakistan, and several Central Asian states—remains one of the largest regional groupings focused on political, economic, and security collaboration. India, which became a full member in 2017, has maintained an active role within the organisation, including holding its rotating chairmanship in 2023.
Ahead of his visit, Singh had reaffirmed India’s commitment to global peace while addressing prevailing security challenges, underscoring New Delhi’s consistent position on combating terrorism at the international level.
