In a chilling development in the South Delhi rape and murder case, investigators have revealed that the accused allegedly attempted to use the victim’s fingerprint to unlock a biometric locker after the assault.
The accused, identified as Rahul Meena, is reported to have dragged the unconscious 22-year-old victim from a rooftop study room to a lower floor of her residence in an effort to access the safe. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to trying to unlock the locker using the victim’s blood-stained finger. However, the biometric system failed to recognise the fingerprint—possibly due to the presence of blood or lack of circulation, according to police sources.
Locker Forced Open; Cash and Jewellery Stolen
After the biometric attempt failed, the accused allegedly broke open the locker using a screwdriver. He is said to have stolen cash and jewellery from the house, placing the items in a bag found on the premises. Reports indicate that approximately ₹2 lakh in cash was missing.
Investigators believe the accused had prior knowledge of the house layout and the location of valuables, having previously been employed by the family.
The Crime and Investigation
The victim, a 22-year-old graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology and daughter of a senior Indian Revenue Service officer, was alone at her residence in Kailash Hills when the incident occurred.
Her parents, who had stepped out for the gym, returned around 8 a.m. to find her unconscious. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead.
Preliminary findings suggest that the victim was sexually assaulted and subsequently strangled using a mobile phone charging cable. Police have also indicated that she sustained blunt force trauma after resisting the attack.
CCTV footage reportedly shows the accused entering the house at approximately 6:49 a.m. and leaving around 7:20 a.m., during which the crime is believed to have taken place.
Entry, Escape and Arrest
Authorities stated that the accused gained entry using a spare key, the location of which he knew from his time as a domestic worker at the residence. He had been dismissed from employment around one-and-a-half months prior following complaints about his conduct.
After the crime, he allegedly changed his clothes inside the house in an attempt to evade detection. CCTV footage captured him entering in dark trousers and leaving in a different pair, carrying a backpack.
According to police, the accused had worked with the family for approximately eight months. Investigators also found that he was involved in online gaming and had borrowed money from other domestic workers, which he had not repaid. He is further reported to be wanted in a separate sexual assault case in Rajasthan’s Alwar.
Following an extensive search operation involving more than 15 police teams across multiple locations, the accused was eventually arrested from a hotel in Dwarka.
Ongoing Probe and Public Concern
Officials have stated that substantial evidence has been collected and that a comprehensive case will be presented before the court. The incident has triggered widespread concern among residents of Kailash Hills, particularly regarding safety measures and the verification of domestic workers.
Police confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, with the postmortem report awaited to establish further details related to the alleged assault.
Authorities have assured that strict legal action will be pursued to ensure justice for the victim.
