Virudhunagar: The death toll in the explosion at a firecracker factory near Virudhunagar, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, has risen to 23. The injured are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The accident occurred at the fireworks factory in the evening. Thirty workers were at work at the time of the accident.
Tamil media reports that explosives exploded with a loud bang at the Vanaja fireworks factory, and that four rooms of the factory were completely destroyed by the impact. Tremors were felt up to a distance of about 10 kilometers.
Concerns were heightened when another explosion occurred during the rescue operation. Firefighters were injured and admitted to the hospital.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has directed to expedite the rescue operations. Stalin has requested Ministers KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thenarasu to reach the spot immediately to expedite the rescue operations, monitor them and provide relief to the affected families. He has also contacted the District Collector and directed him to coordinate all necessary assistance.
