Tragic Death of Five-Year-Old at Bihar Gurukul Sparks Outcry and Allegations of Brutal Abuse

JEHANABAD, BIHAR — A profound tragedy has unfolded in the Jehanabad district of Bihar, where a five-year-old boy lost his life just days after being enrolled in a local residential school. The incident, characterized by allegations of extreme physical and sexual violence, has ignited widespread protests and a rigorous police investigation into the management of the Gurukul Hostel and School.

A Timeline of the Tragedy

On April 1, a mother dropped her young son, Ashu, at the Gurukul in Jehanabad, approximately 50 kilometers from Patna, seeking a quality education for him. Five days later, on the morning of April 6, the family’s aspirations were shattered.

At approximately 5:20 AM, the child’s father, Ajay Kumar Sharma, received a distressing call from the school’s director and principal, Tarun Kumar. Sharma was informed that his son was in critical condition and had been rushed to a local private hospital.

Upon his arrival 15 minutes later, Sharma discovered his son in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bearing horrific injuries. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the child had sustained:

  • A slit throat and severe facial lacerations.
  • Deep abdominal wounds and injuries to the genital area.
  • Multiple cuts beneath the eyebrow and across the cheek.

Despite attempts to transfer the child to a multi-specialty facility in Patna for advanced care, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Allegations of Institutional Failure and Brutality

The medical assessment of the injuries suggests a level of depravity that has shocked the community. Doctors indicated that the child had been subjected to repeated stabbings with sharp objects and sexual assault. The family has further alleged that the nature of the injuries points toward a gang rape.

Testimony from the victim’s elder brother, Rishu—who was also a student at the hostel—has become a focal point of the investigation. Rishu informed his family that on the night of the incident, the principal had allegedly taken the five-year-old to his personal quarters to sleep.

Legal Action and Civil Unrest

The discovery of the crime led to a massive civil demonstration. The victim's family, supported by local villagers, staged a blockade on the Patna-Gaya National Highway-22. The protest, which lasted for several hours, resulted in significant traffic congestion as demonstrators demanded the death penalty for those responsible.

"We believe more than one person was involved in the systematic torture and murder of my son," stated Ajay Kumar Sharma during the protest.

Current Status of the Investigation

Law enforcement has moved swiftly to secure the scene and initiate legal proceedings:

  • Arrests: The principal, Tarun Kumar, has been arrested as the prime suspect.
  • Detentions: A teacher and two female staff members were questioned and subsequently released; the school’s security guard remains under interrogation.
  • Charges: Authorities have registered a case involving murder, gang rape, and rape by a person in authority. Charges have also been filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
  • School Status: The Gurukul facility has been officially sealed by the police pending further forensic and administrative inquiries.

As the investigation continues, this case has reignited a national conversation regarding the safety protocols and oversight of residential educational institutions in rural India.
