US Expands Military Presence in West Asia as Iran Talks Begin in Pakistan

Washington/Islamabad: The United States is significantly reinforcing its military presence in West Asia, deploying additional fighter aircraft and preparing to send up to 2,000 troops, even as diplomatic efforts with Iran gain momentum in Islamabad.

According to reports citing US officials and flight-tracking data, advanced jet fighters and attack aircraft have already been positioned in the region. Additional troops from the elite 82nd Airborne Division are expected to follow, further bolstering an already elevated American military footprint, which now exceeds 50,000 personnel.

At sea, US carrier strike groups and destroyers continue to operate across key waterways, while Marine and naval units remain on standby or in transit. The Pentagon is thus expanding its operational readiness amid lingering tensions despite a temporary ceasefire.

Talks Underway in Islamabad

The military build-up coincides with high-stakes negotiations between Washington and Tehran, mediated by Pakistan. The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has arrived in Islamabad following delays linked to ongoing Israeli operations in Lebanon.

The US delegation is headed by Vice President JD Vance, who arrived in Pakistan on Saturday and was received by Army Chief Asim Munir. The talks are expected to be conducted indirectly, with both sides seated separately and Pakistani officials acting as intermediaries.

President Donald Trump expressed cautious optimism ahead of the talks, while Vance stated he was “looking forward to negotiations,” warning that Washington would respond firmly if Iran fails to engage in good faith.

Ceasefire Remains Fragile

The timing of the negotiations is critical. The recently brokered ceasefire between the US and Iran has halted weeks of direct confrontation but remains under strain, particularly due to continued Israeli military actions in Lebanon. Stabilising the truce and preventing a relapse into open conflict are expected to dominate the agenda in Islamabad.

Concerns Over China’s Role

Amid the diplomatic push, fresh concerns have emerged regarding potential external involvement. Reports suggest that China may be considering the transfer of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft systems (MANPADS) to Iran—claims that Beijing has denied. Such weapons pose a significant threat to low-flying aircraft and were reportedly used during recent hostilities, including in an incident involving a downed US fighter jet.

Expanded US Military Footprint

The US deployment in the region now includes advanced aircraft such as F-35, F-22, and F-15 fighter jets, as well as B-2 strategic bombers. Key naval assets include the aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford, along with their accompanying strike groups.

The parallel escalation of military preparedness and diplomatic engagement underscores the high stakes of the current moment, as global powers seek to balance deterrence with dialogue in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
