Tributes have poured in from across County Tyrone following the sudden and tragic passing of teenager Hugh John Campbell, who has been remembered as a “truly good soul” who left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A Year 12 student at St Joseph's College Coalisland, Hugh John died unexpectedly on Tuesday, prompting an outpouring of grief from his school, sporting community, and local residents.
A Life Remembered
In a heartfelt tribute, staff at St Joseph’s College described Hugh John as a young man whose presence was “impossible to forget,” noting his kindness, warmth, and ability to make others feel valued.
“He brought light into every room,” the school said, recalling his joyful nature, warm smile, and sense of humour that uplifted those around him. Known for his politeness and generosity with his time, he was widely admired by both peers and teachers.
Passion for Gaelic Football
Hugh John was also a dedicated Gaelic football player and a proud member of Coalisland Na Fianna GAC. His club described him as “the heart and soul” of the team, highlighting his unwavering commitment from youth ranks through to the minor squad.
His recent achievement—winning an Ulster Under-16 Pat King Championship medal—was a moment of immense pride for the young player and his family. Club members noted that their grounds at Fr. Peter Campbell Park had become his “second home,” reflecting his deep connection to the sport and community.
Community in Mourning
Local organisations, including Coalisland Training Services Ltd, also paid tribute, remembering Hugh John for his “warmth and kindness” and his dedication across various vocational training programmes. He was described as a hardworking and respectful individual who earned the admiration of all who interacted with him.
Eyewitness accounts and community statements spoke of the profound void left by his passing, particularly among his teammates and classmates. As a mark of respect, his club has suspended all activities, with facilities temporarily closed.
A Lasting Legacy
Hugh John is survived by his parents, Brian and Ciara, and his sisters, Aileen and Brianna. Tributes from across the community have emphasised not only his sporting talent but also his character—marked by humility, friendliness, and a genuine concern for others.
As the community comes to terms with the loss, he is being remembered not just for his achievements, but for the positivity and warmth he brought into everyday life—a quiet yet enduring legacy that will not be forgotten.
