Moscow: The two countries have officially accepted a three-day ceasefire announced under the mediation of US President Donald Trump ahead of ceremonies in Red Square.
The ceasefire, which will last from May 9 to 11, is seen as the first step towards ending years of bloody fighting. Putin has said he is ready for direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Putin expressed his willingness to meet in a third country, but he also put forward the condition that the talks would only be relevant if a lasting peace agreement was reached. This followed his communication with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico. He thanked Trump for facilitating the talks, adding that this was an internal issue between Russia and Ukraine .
Trump praised Putin and Zelensky for agreeing to a ceasefire. The two countries have agreed to exchange about 1,000 prisoners of war on humanitarian grounds. Trump said that the ceasefire is not just a pause, but that he hopes it will be the beginning of an end to a long-running war. He believes that the exchange of prisoners of war will increase trust between the two countries.
