IRELAND ON HEATWAVE ALERT: MET ÉIREANN ISSUES NATIONWIDE ADVISORY AS TEMPERATURES SURGE TOWARD 30°C

DUBLIN — Met Éireann has officially placed the country under a week-long nationwide weather advisory, warning that a "prolonged spell of very warm or hot weather" will bring full-blown heatwave conditions across Ireland.
The advisory is active through next Tuesday, July 14, 2026, with forecasters warning that a Status Yellow high-temperature warning is highly likely to follow in the coming days as a powerful high-pressure system locks over the country.
'Tropical Nights' and Extreme Heat Stress
Daytime maximum temperatures are projected to widely exceed 25°C. The peak intensity is expected to hit from Friday through the weekend, pushing local thermometers up into the high 20s or low 30s.
Meteorologists are also preparing the public for exceptionally rare "tropical nights" this weekend, with overnight temperatures failing to drop below 15°C to 20°C. Forecasters have raised urgent flags regarding severe heat stress, heightened wildfire risks, and localized drought conditions.
Motorists Warned over Car 'Ticking Time Bombs'
With ambient temperatures rising rapidly, safety experts and automotive groups have issued an immediate directive to drivers to clear specific hazards out of their vehicles before Thursday night.
When outside temperatures reach 30°C, the interior of a parked vehicle can spiral past 60°C within minutes due to the greenhouse effect. Motorists must immediately remove:
  • Vapes & Electronic Devices: Lithium-ion batteries left in direct sunlight face severe thermal runaway risks, posing a dangerous explosion and fire threat.
  • Pressurized Aerosols: Everyday cans like deodorants, hairsprays, or body sprays can experience rapid gas expansion and burst violently.
  • Medications: Inhalers, EpiPens, and standard pills degrade under high thermal conditions, rendering them entirely ineffective.
  • Plastic Water Bottles: Clear plastic bottles can act as a magnifying lens, focusing sunlight into a concentrated beam capable of catching car upholstery on fire.
Keeping Engines and Drivers Safe
Mechanics are urging drivers to check engine coolants and tire pressures before commencing any journeys. High asphalt temperatures dramatically increase the risk of roadside blowouts. Motorists are reminded that if an engine begins to overheat while driving, turning the cabin heater on to maximum while rolling down the windows can help pull destructive heat away from the engine block.
Furthermore, health officials are urging drivers to remain vigilant against heat exhaustion. Drivers experiencing sudden dizziness, confusion, nausea, or heavy, clammy sweating should immediately pull over to safety to prevent a collision.
