BANGKOK — Security forces have placed Thailand's southernmost provinces on high alert following a wave of more than 50 synchronized arson and incendiary attacks that shook the border region.
The coordinated offensive, which unfolded late Saturday between 8:00 p.m. and midnight, targeted local government buildings, utility infrastructure, and commercial sites across Narathiwat, Yala, and Pattani, resulting in multiple injuries, severe property damage, and the swift imposition of localized overnight curfews.
While regional military task forces and the Internal Security Operations Command have stepped up checkpoint patrols and border security, no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the violence, which security analysts note bears the hallmarks of a persistent, decades-long separatist insurgency seeking greater autonomy in the country's restive, Muslim-majority southern territories.
