WELLINGTON — New Zealand and the United States have announced joint funding to upgrade infrastructure at the Cook Islands port to enhance regional maritime capabilities.
The collaborative initiative is designed to strengthen security, boost economic resilience, and improve logistical efficiency across the South Pacific. Officials noted that the project will focus on modernizing port facilities to support safe navigation and accommodate increased maritime traffic in the region.
The funding underscores a deepening strategic partnership between Washington, Wellington, and Pacific Island nations amid rising geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific. Local leaders welcomed the assistance, emphasizing that modernized maritime infrastructure is critical for trade, disaster response, and sustainable development throughout the island territories.
