MANILA — Four pilots were killed after two Philippine Air Force training aircraft collided in mid-air and crashed at a military air base south of Manila, officials confirmed on Saturday, October 24.
The accident occurred on Friday afternoon at Fernando Air Base in Lipa City, Batangas province. The two SF-260 aircraft collided while flying at low altitude before crashing within the base’s perimeter.
The Philippine Air Force has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. As a safety precaution, it has temporarily grounded its remaining SF-260 aircraft while the inquiry is under way.
One of the aircraft crashed near accommodation buildings used by military personnel. Officials said no injuries were reported on the ground.
The latest tragedy follows two previous fatal accidents involving the same type of aircraft. Two pilots died when an SF-260 crashed during a training flight in Benguet province in May. Another crash in 2023 also killed two crew members.
The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision and help establish what led to the deaths of the four pilots.
