THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has ordered safety restrictions at waterfalls, water bodies and vulnerable tourist destinations as heavy rain warnings remain in force. The government has also directed tourism authorities to operate round-the-clock control rooms until the weather alerts are withdrawn.
The India Meteorological Department issued orange alerts for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode on Thursday, October 22, warning of isolated very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Restrictions will also apply to neighbouring districts experiencing widespread rain. Tourism activities in hilly areas vulnerable to landslides and slope failures are to be restricted until conditions improve.
Authorities have been instructed to install warning signs near vulnerable destinations, inform visitors about weather risks and publish emergency contact numbers. Police, fire and rescue services and disaster management teams will coordinate emergency responses.
Fishing has been prohibited off the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts until October 25 because of strong winds and adverse sea conditions.
Residents and visitors planning trips within Kerala should check the latest district-level weather alerts and local restrictions before travelling. Waterfalls, riverbanks and landslide-prone hill routes require particular caution during periods of heavy rain.
