NAGQU, TIBET — At least 16 people have died and 65 have been injured after a magnitude-7 earthquake struck northern Tibet in China on Thursday night, according to local authorities.
The earthquake hit the Nagqu region at around 10:33 pm local time, damaging or destroying hundreds of homes and livestock shelters. Some of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.
Rescue and relief operations are continuing, with more than 300 police officers deployed to assist residents and inspect damaged buildings. More than 12,000 people have reportedly been moved to safer locations.
Several aftershocks were recorded following the main earthquake, adding to concerns about the safety of residents and rescue teams. The region's high altitude and difficult terrain are also complicating relief efforts.
Authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage as emergency teams continue their work. Residents have been advised to remain cautious amid the possibility of further tremors.
