The new IRP card, which meets the updated EU Common format specifications, includes the cardholder's signature and additional security features.
The old version of the IRP cards (see example below) will remain valid until the expiry date that is printed on the card or until 31 May 2022, whichever is the later.
The date of 31 May 2022 is in line with the temporary extension of immigration permissions announced by the Minister during Covid-19.
What is an Irish Residence Permit (IRP)?
If you come to Ireland from outside the EU and Switzerland and want to stay for more than 90 days, you must apply for an immigration permit and register once it has been granted. Once approved, you must register your IRP card within 90 days of applying for it. Do not worry if you do not get an appointment within this period - we will not cancel your permit or expect you to leave the country while waiting for you to register.
Registration is the process by which GNIB immigration permit states that you have been granted a residence permit in Ireland. Once you have successfully registered you will receive an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card by post. It shows the type of permit (i.e. what kind of visa you have.. student, visit, work, residence) that you get on the Irish Residence Permit (IRP).
What you need to know about Irish Residence Permits
An Irish Residence Permit is a small wallet-sized card represented by a stamp number that shows you are legally in Ireland with your immigration permit. Each stamp shows what you can do while you are here, for example studying, working or investing in a business.
- IRP card is not a visa (although IRP card holders do not need other visas to travel to Ireland) it is a travel document that allows you to travel to the country.
- IRP card is not an identity card but an important document proving that you are legally in Ireland. IRP does not grant you new rights or entitlements.
- An IRP does not allow you to travel to other EU countries or live independently. All existing international travel and immigration laws still apply. It is your responsibility to check what you need to do to enter other countries before you travel.
- You should always hold your IRP card and show it to the authorities if required.
