PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi was speaking at the National Assembly session to elect Pakistan's new Prime Minister.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Monday held Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot Abhinandan Vartaman hostage for 60 hours during the 2019 Balakot airstrikes.
Qureshi was speaking at the National Assembly to elect Pakistan's new Prime Minister. Qureshi was also in the running for the PM's job after his nomination was approved on Sunday. Shehbaz Sharif, president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is the main opposition candidate.
The country should be proud that India attacked Pakistan after the Pulwama suicide attack. Imran Khan responded appropriately to India and released and congratulated Abhinav, ”Qureshi said, praising his party president.
Vartaman fired an F-16 over Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, but was captured by Pakistani forces after his plane was shot down by enemy forces.
The Pakistani military was forced to release him following widespread pressure from the Indian side, along with international intervention in the matter. Varthaman was part of the 51st Squadron based in Srinagar, which flew on 27 February 2019 to repel an airstrike by Pakistan.
Qureshi later announced that lawmakers from the party of the ousted Prime Minister of Pakistan would resign en masse from the lower house of parliament in protest of his political opponents forming a new government.
"We are announcing that we are all resigning," said Qureshi, a former foreign minister and vice president of Khan's party. Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote in the same assembly on Sunday morning.
