DAMASCUS — Major global financial networks Visa and Mastercard have successfully processed their first international card transactions in Syria in more than 15 years, marking a historic milestone in the country's economic reintegration.
The breakthrough comes just days after the United States officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, lifting major economic sanctions that had isolated Damascus from the global banking system since the onset of the civil war. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa marked the occasion by conducting a live transaction at a Damascus hotel, utilizing a gold-colored Visa card alongside Central Bank Governor Mohammed Safwat Raslan.
Financial institutions—including Lebanon's Fransabank, local payment firm Paymera, and Qatar National Bank—collaborated to reconnect Syria’s point-of-sale terminal infrastructure to international processing networks. Economic officials in Damascus hailed the development as a vital step toward modernizing the nation's financial architecture, easing transactions for international visitors, and attracting long-term foreign investment.
