Colombo: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned amid weeks of popular protests over weeks of political uncertainty. The resignation comes at a time when the country is going through a severe financial crisis.
Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections. The situation was exacerbated after pro-government attacks on protesters. The caretaker Prime Minister has resigned following a nationwide curfew.

There were also reports of attacks on the homes of several ministers. Mahinda confirmed his resignation this evening. Prior to this, pro-Mahinda activists had launched an attack on the protesters.
The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a crowd gathered outside Temple Trees, Mahinda's official residence. Crowds reportedly smashed tents near Temple Trees. Riot police arrived and took control of the situation.
