Today the first case of monkey pox was reported on the island of Ireland. The first infection on the island was reported this morning in Northern Ireland.
Monkeypox incident management teams have been set up in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to prepare for possible cases of the disease.
The Northern health department is expected to hold a briefing later today. According to the World Health Organization, monkey pox mainly occurs in the tropical rainforests of central and western Africa, with occasional outbreaks. Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease that manifests clinically with fever, skin rashes, and swollen lymph nodes.
It starts with fever, headache, muscle aches and fatigue. Other symptoms of monkeypox infection include back pain, swollen lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy), and tremors and fatigue. Monkeypox virus is a smallpox-like viral infection transmitted from animals to humans. The patient develops a rash, which often starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body. The disease usually lasts 2-4 weeks. Mortality rates vary but range from 0 to 10 percent of all registered infections.
According to the World Health Organization, monkeypox is usually self-limiting, but can be severe in some individuals, such as children, pregnant women, or people with weakened immune systems due to other health problems.
