The Center on Sunday clarified in a press release issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology that photocopies of their Aadhaar cards should not be shared with any institution.
The ministry said in a statement on May 27 that the Aadhaar card numbers could be misused, causing panic over the theft of information. The ministry explained that the earlier directive would be withdrawn immediately as there was a possibility of misinterpretation.
In a notification issued on May 27, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that Aadhaar, which has now been withdrawn, could be used by companies licensed by the UIDAI to establish an individual's identity. An earlier press release said that private companies like hotels or film halls are not eligible to keep copies of Aadhaar cards.
"Unlicensed private entities such as hotels or film halls are not permitted to collect or store copies of the Aadhaar card. This is an offense under the Aadhaar Act 2016. If a private entity requests a view of your Aadhaar card or requires a photocopy of your Aadhaar card, please verify that they already have a valid UIDAI license." Says in a statement issued.
Instead of submitting a photocopy of the Aadhaar card, users can download the Aadhaar card from the UIDAI website displaying only the last 4 digits of the Masked Aadhaar number.
“Avoid using a public computer at an Internet cafe / kiosk to download e-Aadhaar. However, if you do, make sure to permanently delete all downloaded copies of e-Aadhaar from your computer, "it says.
What is Masked Aadhaar?
In a masked Aadhaar only last four digits of the 12-digit Aadhaar number are visible. The first eight base numbers of the Aadhaar card are masked and written as 'XXXX-XXXX'. This prevents the person's personal details from being misused, as the entire Aadhaar number is not visible.
What is the difference between masked Aadhaar and regular Aadhaar?
Aadhaar is a 12-digital identification number that is issued by UIDAI to an Indian resident. Masked Aadhaar is the same card but it allows the cardholder to hide the first eight numbers in the card and make only the last four visible.
The masked Aadhaar is nothing but an extra layer of protection on your Aadhaar card that masks the Aadhaar number in the downloaded e-version.
