IRELAND: Resigns at the end of the year - HSE Chief Executive Paul Reid

Ireland: HSE Chief Executive Paul Reid has announced that he will step down later this year.

Mr Reid, who received a salary package of over  400,000 euros last year, says he has no immediate plans for a new career but will step down in December. His departure follows former HSE Chief Operations Officer Anne O'Connor, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan and Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glyn.

"Working at HSE has been the biggest period of my career," Mr. Reid said. Reid said in a message to staff that he was making the decision with a heavy heart and that it was the toughest career decision he had ever made. Reid said his decision was influenced by his desire to spend more time with his family and the belief that "HSE is entering a new phase and the appointment of a new leader is timely."

Paul Reid's resignation as executive head of the Health Service comes as a big surprise. At this point, he has been in this position for more than three years, which is not a long time. But after more than two years of Kovid-19 experience and devastating cyber-attacks, it seems to have lasted longer for him. He will not leave the HSE until December, allowing time to recruit a successor.

During his tenure, Mr. Reid faced record hospital waiting lists, overcrowding in the current emergency department and criticism that Sláintecare health reforms were too slow. However, he oversaw a record health budget of 21 billion per year, additional staff and the successful Covid-19 vaccination program.

While the CMO is not responsible for day-to-day HSE operations or targets, Reid / Holohan clashes are not unexpected, as are calls from the CMO for HSE to achieve goals, such as covid's testing and discovery.

Mr. Reid was the administrative public face of the health service during the greatest health crisis of generations. During media interrogations and health committee hearings, he often gave general answers and was able to be very clear. Mr. Reed always defended his staff and his senior team when subjected to public criticism.

Mr. Reed's departure marks a major shift in the top staff and skills at HSE. Whatever HSE enters a new phase, some long-standing health care challenges remain.
