Many families automatically receive the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BTSCFA) welfare payment, which helps cover the cost of uniforms and shoes for children returning to school. Anyone who has not received a letter notifying them of eligibility for payment by the end of June can apply for payment until September 30.
What is Back to School Allowance (BTSCFA)?
Back to School Allowance is a welfare payment to help parents provide uniforms and footwear for children returning to school. This is known as Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BTSCFA).
Who gets it?
Many families do not need to apply as the allowance is automatic. You may be eligible for the allowance if you: Note: Proof of eligibility for the allowance is required.
- If receiving a social welfare payment, you must be in receipt of a qualifying social protection payment or participate in an approved employment, education or training support scheme
- An approved employment scheme (employment scheme / back to work scheme)
- A Daily Expenses Allowance (formerly called Direct Provision Allowance) or a child's education (or for yourself if you are 18–22 and returning to full-time second-level education), or
- Involved in an Area Partnership Scheme, or Attending a FET (formerly Fás) or Fáilte Ireland training course
- You must receive an increase of one qualifying child (IQC) for each child claiming the allowance (except in certain circumstances).

Also, your child must be between the ages of 4-17 on or before September 30, 2022. If they are between the ages of 18-22 and are returning to full-time second-level education in a recognized school or college in the autumn of 2022.

Remember, children between the ages of 18 and 22 must be in second-level education to qualify.
The Back to School (BTSCFA) Clothing and Footwear Allowance increased amount has been announced further this year. This is only a temporary measure for this academic year. Those receiving BTSCFA funds after July 18, 2022 will benefit from this hike.
Each eligible child under the scheme will receive a back to school clothing and footwear allowance of €100 each. The amount paid will be €260 for each eligible child aged 4-11, and €385 for each child aged 12 and over.
How to get ?
If you are automatically entitled to the payment you do not need to do anything. Many parents automatically receive a back-to-school clothing and footwear allowance. Department letter is distributed to these customers in June. The deadline to apply for 2022 Back to School Apparel and Footwear is September 30, 2022.
If you have not received your Back to School Clothing and Footwear letter by the end of June and you meet the eligibility conditions, you will need to submit an application online at www.MyWelfare.ie.
