New EU roaming rules come into effect for mobile phone users. The new rules mean that a roaming customer who can use 5G services from home must have 5G roaming services available when it is available in another member state. These services may be free or less expensive when calling from home, but additional charges may apply for roaming.
Former EU roaming restrictions for 2017 ended yesterday. The "ROM-Like-at-Home" initiative has been extended to 2032, allowing travelers in the Union and Federal Areas to call, text, and surf the Internet at no extra charge.
As part of the new regulation, you will be notified via a text message about any additional charges for using roaming services on non-terrestrial networks. Network Such works are commonly used for mobile connections on board planes and boats and are not protected by roaming rules.
The new regulation will also help improve access to emergency communications as roaming customers receive messages on their calls to '112' and other emergency services when they enter the country.
Since the United Kingdom left the EU, the "ROM-like-at-home" regime does not apply, with some operators opting to retain the benefits of free roaming. Customers are advised to contact their operators before traveling to the UK.
Customers will also be better informed about the types of services that can bring additional costs, such as calling customer service numbers, help desks or insurance companies.
