Mobile Safety Camera System Expansion 2022
61 New safety camera zones will become operational from 6am on Tuesday 26th July 2022, bringing the total number of safety camera zones nationwide to 1,373. All zones are available on the Garda website and available for GPS Navigation providers to download.
The primary purpose of safety cameras is to reduce speed-related collisions, lessen injuries and save lives. Since 2010, An Garda SÃochána has contributed to making our roads safer through the use of safety cameras, using a service provider ‘GoSafe’ to operate them on its behalf. The cameras are operated using a fleet of marked vehicles.
Road deaths have decreased from 415 in 2000 to 137 in 2021. This shows a dramatic reduction in terms of risk and a huge increase in terms of road safety. To date in 2022, there have been 89 Road Deaths an increase in 28 over 2021 and 13 to date in 2019.
Safety cameras operate in areas where there is a history of speed related collisions known as speed enforcement zones.
In places known as speed enforcement zones, safety cameras are used where there has been a pattern of collisions involving speed. In addition to further evaluation of places of concern identified by local communities through local Garda Community involvement, new locations were chosen after a study of aggregated Garda data from fatal, serious, and minor road traffic collisions.
"When someone chooses to speed, they put themselves and members of their community at risk, notably children, older people, cyclists, and other motorists," said Superintendent Thomas Murphy of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau.
"Our top aim is to make sure that the vast majority of individuals who drive safely do not put themselves in danger due to a small number of dangerous drivers who continue to drive too fast." GoSafe vans operate in regions with a history of fatal, seriously injured, and minor injury collisions that are speed-related.
"Additionally, places that community members have identified as areas of concern have been added to the new zones. The goal is to decrease the frequency of crashes that result in fatalities and serious injuries by identifying and focusing on these high-risk regions."
A fleet of designated cars is used to operate the cameras. More than 2.2m fixed charge notices for speeding offences have been issued in the same time.
