Two teenagers have been detained in Novosibirsk, central Russia, for allegedly attempting to assassinate a Russian military officer under the direction of Ukrainian special services, according to a statement released Thursday by the Federal Security Service (FSB).
The FSB revealed that the minors were recruited through an online platform promising quick financial rewards. After establishing contact, they were remotely coordinated by operatives based in Ukraine. Communications were conducted primarily via the Telegram messaging app, and forensic analysis of the suspects’ electronic devices confirmed the involvement of Ukrainian handlers.
According to authorities, the teens were provided with three containers containing toxic chemicals designed to induce acute heart failure, potentially resulting in death. The substances were reportedly applied to the door handle and side mirror of the target's vehicle. The FSB has withheld the specific identities of the chemicals involved.
A joint operation by the FSB and Russia’s Investigative Committee successfully thwarted the assassination attempt, and the intended victim emerged unharmed. A criminal case has been filed, charging the suspects with attempted murder committed by a group.
This latest case adds to a growing number of incidents linked to alleged Ukrainian sabotage efforts since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. The FSB claims that Ukrainian intelligence has consistently sought to target Russian military personnel and key public figures, often using unconventional methods and enlisting operatives through websites, social media, and messaging apps.
Earlier reports from the FSB highlighted the arrest of individuals connected to Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR), accused of planning attacks on defense industry workers in Yaroslavl by introducing toxic agents into vehicle air systems. Other foiled plots included attempts to poison food and beverages during a pilot celebration in Armavir, and efforts to contaminate humanitarian aid supplies meant for Russian troops.
In these cases, suspects were charged with preparing terrorist acts and high treason.
The FSB continues to urge Russian citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, citing the growing sophistication and frequency of such targeted sabotage operations.
