Irish Prime Minister Taoiseach Micheál Martin visited war-torn cities in Ukraine

 


Taoiseach Micheál Martin witnessed the devastation inflicted by invading Russian forces. He began a trip to Kyiv by viewing the conflict-scarred suburbs of Borodyanka, Bucha and Irpin.

He visited to the site of a mass grave in the grounds of a church in Bucha. Martin is using this Kyiv visit to reiterate his solidarity with Ukrainian authorities facing the Russian occupation. On the 30-minute drive the Taoiseach passed Hostomel airport, where his motorcade stopped to observe the damaged bridge. He also watched bombed warehouses, shopping centers and gas stations.

Next, He visited the town of Borodyanka on the outskirts of Kiev, which suffered extensive damage from Russian shelling. From there, Martin visited the mass grave of St Andrew's Church in Buca.

Nearby cleric showed Mr Martin the location and an related showed photos of unearthed bodies and pictures of civilians cleared out dead on the lanes of the suburb when Russian forces retreated. The Irish delegation then traveled to nearby Irpin and watched apartment blocks destroyed by Russian shells.

Afterwards, Prime Minister Taoiseach Micheál Martin said: 

         "It is difficult to comprehend the devastation and inhumanity of Russia's                attacks on Irpin,Borodyanka and Bucha.

        "Clear how important it is for women and children to get to Ireland to                     escape trauma and brutality. We stand with Ukraine.
