Japan: Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Shot; Health condition is critical

Tokyo: Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot in the eastern city of Nara. Abe, who was shot in the back, remains in critical condition. He was shot in the chest.

He was shot 2 times. Journalists at the scene reported hearing two gunshots. The eyewitness also responded that the shot was fired by someone who came behind Abe.

An unconscious Abe was taken to the hospital. There are unconfirmed reports that Abe suffered a heart attack.

The shooting took place during the campaign meeting for the elections to be held on Sunday to the upper house of the parliament. No further information has been released.

Police have arrested one person in the incident. The police have registered a case of attempted murder against the 42-year-old man.

The incident took place around 11.30 am local time. A man in his 40s who came up behind Abe during his speech reportedly opened fire. He has been taken into police custody. The gun used for shooting was also seized from him.


 

The police have also recovered a gun from him. Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving Prime Minister of Japan, stepped down in 2020 due to ill health.
