There are many important things in a jawan's life like a green jeep, boots and a bed. Trunk boxes are another thing that a soldier always carries. The whole life of a soldier can be seen inside this box. Each soldier's name will be recorded on it. There is a great affinity between soldiers and these trunk boxes.
"Our uniform, bed sheets, family photos, battalion memorabilia, gifts and everything else will be in it. Take this box wherever we go. This box is like our identity," said a 37-year-old CRPF jawan.
Instead of such trunk boxes, the government has decided to give trolley suitcases to the new soldiers. That is, the soldier with the trunk will no longer exist in memories.
Steel trunks have been used by the Indian Army since its inception. It is given to new recruits to the military. A jawan will carry this box with him till his military retirement. A new box is given if the damaged one occurs during the service period.
We once transported everything in this package. All medals and transfer orders are included in this. Soldiers once made their homes out of their trunks and weapons. However, a lot has changed since then. But this trunk holds a special place in our life, according to Jawan.
To evaluate the use of trunk boxes and determine if trolley suitcases should take their place, the government established a committee. Members of the Central Armed Forces, industry representatives, and representatives from other organisations like the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Bureau of Police Research and Development met last week to discuss this issue. A government-designated commission oversees the planning and procedures for the distribution of suitcases to the incoming jawans.
Reports suggest that the government is planning to replace steel trunks with trolley bags from brands like Samsonite and American Tourister.
The jawans own these trunks. They always have it with them. At the time of recruitment, each jawan will receive one of these trunks. It is given to the family in the terrible event that a jawan passes away. It is comparable to transferring the jawan's memories to the family. Such trunk boxes have historical and sentimental value, a CRPF official at the IG level said.
The new trolley suitcases, according to officials, are significantly superior and can keep soldiers' stuff safer.
