Dublin: NCT pass for vehicles too? Lighting and electrical problems are the most common vehicles (35%). Steering, side slip' tests and suspension problems were also found for the cars.
The hybrid Toyota C-HR passed initial testing and cars were tested at 49 NCT centers around Ireland in 2021, with Portlaoise achieving the highest pass rate of 60.22%.
In contrast, 38.12% of cars tested at Castlerea last year passed on the first attempt. Less than half of the 15 test centers had a pass rate, with a total pass rate of 52.8%. An analysis of figures recently published by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) found that only four of the 200 most popular car models had a pass rate of more than 80%.
Of the 1.4 million cars tested in 2021, 665,000 (47.2%) failed the first test. Among the top models, Peugeot 206 and 307 cars recorded failure rates of more than 32% in terms of lighting and electrical problems, while 34.99% of Volkswagen Boras and 34.32% of Citroen C5 cars had problems with steering and suspension. The AA advised motorists to prepare ahead of the NCT.
- Clean the vehicle thoroughly.
- Make sure the tires are at the correct pressure and tread depth.
- Check that the lights are working properly
- Make sure the engine is in good condition for testing
- Service cars before testing
A self-styled 'Urban SUV' had a higher success rate than any flagship vehicle that passed through the NCT last year. An analysis of NCT tests conducted on more than 1.4 million vehicles last year found that 85.42% of hybrid Toyota C-HR cars tested passed the initial test. Toyota brands the C-HR on its website as "an urban SUV range that answers all the questions of the city". The Japanese-made car was first introduced in Ireland in 2016.
Suzuki Vitara had a pass percentage of 81.77% while Renault Kadjar scored 80.94%. The expensive Mercedes-Benz CLA – the only SUV in the top four – had a pass rate of 80.2%.
Total figures show that the Volkswagen Golf was the most tested model in 2021. More than half (52.95%) of the 71,962 golfers tested won.
The second most popular model tested was the Ford Focus, but only 47.23% of these 71,723 cars passed the first time.
Among more than 1,000 cars tested, the Lexus IS200 was the worst with just 27.73% success. Volkswagen Bora (28.28%) and Seat Cordoba (29.45%) also have a pass rate below 30%.
A spokesman for the RSA points to a number of other factors that affect whether a car passes its NCT.
- “The mileage a car passes has a significant impact on pass rates, with higher mileage vehicles more likely to fail. This particularly affects some rural areas,
- They have seen road conditions play a role in NCT performance, with poor driving surfaces leading to problems with the car's brakes and suspension.
- Failure rate: Lighting and electrical problems were the most common faults, which accounted for 35% of all failed vehicles. This was followed by steering and suspension problems, which accounted for 32.9% of failed cars.
- More than one in four cars (25.49%) failed the 'side slip' test, which measures how much a car veers left or right by simulating driving on a straight, level road without touching the steering wheel.
The age of the car plays an important role in whether it passes the NCT. For example, the latest Lexus IS200 tested last year was registered in 2013, while the latest Cordoba and Bora cars tested were registered in 2010 and 2006 respectively. The success rate for 2015-reg cars was 73.2%, while the success rate for ten-year-old cars was just 34.66%.
