IRELAND: Defense Force Monitors Irish Sea: Russian Submarine and Destroyer Drill Used

     The Russian cruiser Marshal Ustinov

Several Russian warships are believed to be in the Irish Sea 100km off the coast of Cork.

While Russian Navy ships cannot be tracked on public marine traffic radars, their support vessels can.

The Irish Defense Force told CorkBio that they were monitoring the situation after the support vessel Vjasma was spotted on Tuesday evening.

The Vjazma is a Russian navy oil tanker ship that serves as a support vessel and follows the massive war ships of the Northern Fleet, the division of the Russian navy in charge of Arctic sea defence.

The destroyer Vice Admiral Ustinov, the cruiser Marshal Ustinov, and an unidentified submarine are believed to be escorting it in the Irish Sea.

Security professionals who monitor Russian naval operations became aware of the Vjazma after it was discovered 54 nautical miles (100 km) off the Old Head of Kinsale on Wednesday morning.

According to H. I. Sutton, a defence specialist, the oiler is probably travelling with "heavily armed" warships that are sailing toward the UK across the Irish Sea.

He wrote on Twitter: "Russian warships approaching UK, seemingly for a controversial passage through British territorial waters, are making progress. Currently doing 10 knots, this may take a while."

The Russian warships, he said, were reportedly on their way home after spending more than six months in the Mediterranean supporting Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Hans de Vreij, a retired Dutch journalist, also tweeted: "A Russian naval squadron is approaching the Irish Sea. These include the tanker Vjazma, the destroyer Vice Admiral Ustinov, the cruiser Marshal Ustinov, and an unknown submarine.

The latter is the only one that is "visible" on tracking websites like MarineTraffic.

Several vessels from the Royal Navy of Great Britain are ominously stalking them.

The British military ship HMS Lancaster is following the fleet in the Irish Sea.

The new Russian activity off the coast of Ireland comes only two weeks after a navy support ship made an unexpected arrival.
