Kochi: Two bilateral transplants were performed on two patients at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, Kerala State.
Amaresh (25), a patient from Karnataka, and another patient from Iraq, Yousif Hasan Saeed Al Suwaini (29), who lost both his hands due to electrocution, underwent transplants using limbs collected from donors who were victims of fatal road accidents in Kerala. Recently, Amaresh and Yousif Hasan visited the hospital for reviews. Doctors at Amrita Hospital informed that she is now fine. Amaresh approached the hand transplant team at Amrita Hospital, Kochi and subsequently registered with the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS) in September 2018 as an organ recipient awaiting transplant. Vinod (54), who was declared brain dead in a car accident in Kollam, was selected for a pair of organs for transplant. Vinod's family is ready to donate his organs, including his hands. "It was a complex and rare surgery that lasted 18 hours," said Dr Iyer, head of the Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Amrita Hospital. He said that only three shoulder level full arm transplants have been done in the world and this is the first in India.
