ASSAM: Guwahati's world-famous Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) resumed service from Saturday after a two-year

Guwahati: International flights operating from Guwahati's world-famous Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) resumed service from Saturday after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first flight to take off on Saturday was a Druk Air flight that left Guwahati for Singapore at 9.10 am. The same airline will operate from Guwahati to Paro in Bhutan on Sundays, LGBIA officials said.

Druk Air, Bhutan's national carrier, is currently the only international airline serving Guwahati, the gateway to Northeast India.

“Prior to the pandemic, Druk Air flights were operating from Paro to Singapore and back with a stopover at Guwahati both ways. But due to Covid restrictions, the flights have been stopped in 2020,” said an LGBTI official. However, with Bhutan re-opening its borders to international tourists, Druk Air has started operations, which will allow travelers from Guwahati and the Northeast to travel to Singapore and Paro with ease.

As part of the Centre's UDAAN programme, a flight from Guwahati to Dhaka, Bangladesh was introduced in 2019. But the service was suspended within months due to lack of traffic.

Efforts are underway to start flights from Guwahati to Yangon (Myanmar), Kathmandu (Nepal), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Hanoi (Vietnam) and Bangkok (Thailand) in the next few months, officials said.
