Dublin: A new Irish-language children's TV channel is set to hit screens, TG4 has announced. Cúla4 will be hosted by Niamh Ní Chróinín.
The new channel, called Cúla4, will run from morning to evening and will feature a children's news service, entertainment and educational content. The move was announced by Culture Minister Catherine Minister Martin, who gave the green light to the TG4 proposal.
Minister Martin said: "Budget 2023 represents a measured and targeted approach to supporting and developing the Irish language in the year ahead."
Full details will be announced by TG4 in due course, but the minister said the channel would "reflect the diverse backgrounds of children living in all parts of Ireland, particularly the Gaeltacht and Irish-speaking communities".

The €3.3 million for the channel was included as part of the budget allocation for TG4, which received an additional €7.3 million in funding, the biggest annual increase the broadcaster has received in Ireland. The Green Party deputy leader added that the increase in funding to TG4 would enable the Irish-language broadcaster to "better serve Irish-speaking communities and provide greater support to our local creative companies".

In 2021, TG4 announced plans to launch a full children's channel. Development work began in 2022 with the appointment of Carina Fairtier as Cúla4 channel manager.
Cúla4 will be represented at public events and functions and will act as the cross-platform voice of Cúla4 and Ni Croinin as TG4's youth ambassador.
