The thunderstorm warning, issued shortly before 2pm, applies to Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Meath and Wicklow. An orange rain warning is also in place for Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.
For Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Cavan, Monaghan, Cork, Kerry, and Tipperary, a Status Yellow rain warning is also in effect.
The two rain warnings end tonight at midnight, while the thunderstorm warning ends at 6 o'clock.
There is a significant likelihood of localised flooding in the affected areas, according to Met Éireann's outlook from today.
With embedded thunderstorms, intense showery rain will continue to hit parts of the east, causing localised floods and a danger of hail.
"Drier and brighter conditions will give way to more bands of thundery rain from the south through the afternoon, and these bands will travel north over the country into this evening.
The forecast describes the weather as being "quite breezy and blustery with fresh to strong and gusty easterly winds and maxima of 12 to 17 degrees overall, mildest towards the southwest."
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is urging drivers to drive carefully while the warnings are in effect.
Road users in regions with Orange Rainfall Warnings are encouraged to verify the local traffic and weather before starting a journey.
In wet weather, drivers are advised to slow down and provide more space between their car and the one in front of it when braking.
According to the RSA, this is crucial for high-speed roads with greater aquaplaning risk, like dual carriageways and highways.
