The inclement weather left thousands of homes across the country without power. Torrential rain across Ireland on Sunday lashed Cork and Kerry in particular with rain and wind, with many roads flooded and people forced to abandon their cars.
This comes after a status yellow rain and wind warning was issued for Munster, Connacht and Co Donegal. More disruption is expected, including flooding and dangerous road conditions, especially near the coasts. The flooding comes amid status yellow wind warnings for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo. The warning is valid until 12 noon on Monday.
Emergency services in Cork say conditions in the city are challenging on Sunday evening, following torrential downpours that led to long tailbacks and widespread surface flooding on Cork city's link roads. The heavy downpour brought about 15 mm of rain in two hours, causing traffic jams and delays on several link roads in the city.

Access to Cork University Hospital for ambulances was described as problematic at times on Sunday afternoon. Several buildings were damaged by minor flooding and the fire service received dozens of reports of flooding during the day. Two of the three lanes on the South Link Road between Mahon and Kinsale Road roundabout were closed and traffic was snarled as rain and mud from Mt Vernon flooded.
Most of the people worst affected by the power outage on Sunday morning were in Cork. In Kilbarry, north of Cork city, 1,924 customers were without power.
The ESB later reported major outages in Salt Hill, County Galway, where 700 customers were without power, and Castlecomer, County Kilkenny, where 600 customers were without power. ESB Networks says customers are also without power in parts of Conamara, Mayo and Kerry. A spokesman said the outages were mainly weather-related and the level of disruption was related to past experiences of similar yellow weather warnings.
Earlier, electricity was restored to thousands of homes and businesses after ESB network maintenance workers worked to fix the outages.
