The Irish President gave this year's Christmas and New Year message in memory of those who sought asylum from abroad, those affected by the Creeslough disaster, those abroad from Ireland and Ireland's recently deceased soldiers.
He also said in his Christmas message that we should think about the people who have left their country including Ukraine and are scattered in different parts of the world. Let me thank the members of our defense forces who are abroad this Christmas. He also remembered Irish soldier Sean Rooney, who was killed in Lebanon, with his message. He said that the sacrifices made by the soldiers for peace are highly appreciated. President Higgins also paid tribute to those working in the health and voluntary sectors this Christmas season in his Christmas and New Year message.
In his Christmas message, the President also remembered those who lost their lives in October's tragedy at Creeslough. He said to the families of those who died in the disaster, may your pain be relieved in the coming year. May I extend my condolences this Christmas in a special way to the people of Creaslow whom I have had the opportunity to visit during this time of tragedy and sorrow, and to all who have been saddened by the terrible tragedy that has visited that close-knit community. I hope that this coming year gives you some space for healing, and that with your deep grief, you can remember your loved ones with appreciation for all that you shared with them, and for your life together.
I thank everyone who continues to care for our communities throughout the Christmas season. We are grateful to those who work in our hospitals and emergency services, to the volunteers who meet the needs of the homeless, vulnerable and marginalized and to all those who generously give up their Christmas days. Our thoughts and solidarity are with the brave women and men who are protesting against the oppression and humiliation of women in many parts of the world, and with those who are calling for an end to gender discrimination.
