Online child sexual exploitation: Forty Irish children were victims of this year

    image:PA

This year, the garda reported that forty Irish children were victims of online child sexual exploitation.

Interpol gave the garda access to the web content.

The majority of child victims are young girls under the age of 16, although according to the garda, victims might occasionally be quite young.

Social media websites allow users to access many of the shared photographs online.

It generally isn't just one person to one person. Unfortunately, these things can go viral

The majority of the content, according to Superintendent Ian Lackey of the Garda National Protective Service Bureau, was produced by peers and shared by them.

Sharing explicit photographs of youngsters, he asserted, is prohibited.

No arrests have been made in connection with the Irish victims, according to Superintendent Lackey, and some of the suspects may reside elsewhere.

According to him, in situations where a person creates their own image, it relies on who they share it with and where it ends up online.

"In most cases, it involves more than one person. Sadly, these things have the potential to go viral, he said.

"People may disagree, and pictures may be circulated. The young kid who originally sent the photo suffers great injury and distress as a result.

Even if several of the accused are also minors, he claimed that the garda will get in touch with the families of the victims.

Families are typically "very shocked" and "disappointed," according to Superintendent Lackey, when they learn that graphic photographs of their child have been posted online.

He added that the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in the US is making a significant increase in the amount of referrals. In the previous year, there was a roughly 50% increase in referrals.

In addition, Superintendent Lackey cautioned that anyone, regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity, might work as an online groomer.

It may occur over a brief or extended length of time. Groomers can establish relationships with children, their families, and friends over the course of weeks to two years in order to appear trustworthy, the expert continued.

It could be a family member, a friend or someone who has targeted them, including teachers, faith group leaders, sports coaches or anybody in authority.

Children are being groomed by strangers or someone they know, either online or in person. It could be a friend, a family member, or someone who has targeted them, such as a teacher, a religious figurehead, a sports coach, or anyone in a position of authority.

The alerts came after 10 searches for internet child exploitation materials were conducted last week across the nation.

Numerous goods were found following searches in Galway, Wicklow, Dublin, and Limerick.

More than 700 investigation files have also been forwarded by the Online Child Exploitation Unit to regional divisional protective service units.

The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children recovered the files, which were about Irish persons watching internet child abuse content.

Investigators view the photographs, according to Superintendent Lackey.
