Air passengers have been asked by Dublin Airport to check their flight status in advance after the closure of Stansted and Gatwick Airports last night.

Even though Dublin Airport has stated that it is "totally operational this morning," the airport has also stated that "a small number of flights have been cancelled for today, while some may be subject to delays, primarily owing to weather disruption at UK airports."

The runways at Stansted and Gatwick airports have to be temporarily cleared of snow, and yellow warnings of ice, fog, and snow remain in effect for the majority of the UK.

Last night, Stansted Airport issued the following statement: "Delays to flights were encountered earlier due to aircraft de-icing, which is a ground handler's responsibility. Safety of aircraft and passengers is essential.

"Passengers are urged to contact their airline for the most recent flight status."

A representative for Stansted Airport confirmed in a statement to The Journal this morning that "the runway is open and fully operational, and planes are taking off and landing routinely."

The Stansted spokesperson did, however, add, "Passengers are encouraged to check with their airline for the latest flight information." Some flights "may be delayed due to the poor weather," she said.

Also confirmed by the spokesman was that "the runway reopened at 3am this morning."

"Sunday, December 11/Monday, December 12: Snow and cold weather may create inconvenience at the airport," Gatwick tweeted in the meanwhile. Before heading to the airport, passengers are urged to check the status of their flight with their airline and the current local travel conditions.

Dublin Airport issued a warning yesterday night saying that "additional cancellations are now expected" this morning into London airports as a result of it.

Dublin Airport warned users to "check your flight status in advance with your carrier" in a tweet.

Over 140 flights to and from Dublin Airport were cancelled on Friday, causing serious delays, and over 50 flights were cancelled on Saturday.

However, things improved yesterday with 14 flights being cancelled despite the fact that there were several delays throughout day.

The National Emergency Coordination Group met yesterday to discuss the situation, and they plan to continue meeting at least through this coming Friday.

Up to noon, there is a Status Orange weather warning for ice and low temperatures.
