Dublin is gearing up for another huge St Patrick's Day parade as hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists alike take to the streets today, Ireland's national celebration.
Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. In Ireland, he is revered as a saint who brought the Christian faith to Ireland. His feast day is celebrated all over the world on March 17 every year.
On this day, the Church gives permission to have a little Guinness and wine along with the services in the churches.
Although Saint Patrick is considered the patron saint of Ireland today, he was not Irish himself and was not even born on the Emerald Isle. Patrick's parents were Romans and lived in the area of modern England, or more precisely, in Scotland or Wales (scholars can't agree on exactly where). He was born in 385 AD. By then, most Romans were Christians, and Christianity spread rapidly throughout Europe.
Parades are held in cities and towns in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. This day is also celebrated on the international stage. More than 400 landmarks in over 50 countries turned green to mark πSt Patrick's Day”ππ.
"The 2023 National St. Patrick's Day Parade will be the biggest and most spectacular ever," organizers say.
The women's national football team has been chosen as the grand marshal for the parade. Team manager Vera Pauw, defender Diane Caldwell and former international Paula Gorham will represent the team and lead the national parade on March 17. Actor and director Patrick Duffy was chosen as the international guest
The parade will take place in the city of Dublin and on various streets in Ireland from 12 noon. However the parade in Dublin will be the biggest.
