An Indian optometrist who recently arrived in Ireland with false information failed to inform employers that he had not had an eye test in more than ten years, contrary to what he claimed on his CV. The charges relate to the treatment of more than 30 clients between January 21 and February 8, 2022, when he worked at Specsavers branches in Mallow and Middleton. Mr Puranik, an Indian national, joined Specsavers early last year but resigned on 16 February 2022, less than a month into the job. They claimed that his failure to disclose his lack of relevant experience during the recruitment process compromised the health, safety and welfare of all the clients he saw.

There was also concern that too few of the optometrist's clients needed the new prescriptions, which were described as "extremely unusual".

The investigation involved 19 of the 121 patients Mr Puranik saw in Mallow and 12 of the 28 patients he saw in Middleton. All affected patients were recalled for retesting by Specsavers. In one case, the optometrist failed to identify macular holes in both eyes of an elderly client at Mallow Outlet who should have been referred to hospital immediately. for reviewing images of clients' retinas while failing to inform employers that he needed training to evaluate such images. - A fitness-to-practice inquiry by CORU, the regulatory body for health and social care professionals, also found Nagesh Puranik guilty of professional misconduct.

Nagesh Puranik, who worked at two Specsavers branches in Cork last year, has now faced disqualification and deportation. He can no longer work in Ireland. In addition, the CORU Fitness-to-Practice Committee found 35 allegations of poor professional conduct against Mr Puranik to be substantiated.
