Wexford: The National Parks and Wildlife Service has advised people not to light fires or light barbecues in parks or nature reserves after three fires broke out in a County Wexford reserve in 24 hours. (NPWS) appealed to the public.
NPWS Director General, Niall Ó Donnchú, has called for public cooperation to protect nature. He said: “While the NPWS has increased ground crews and aerial surveillance this week, we still need your help to protect nature at this high risk time.
“We ask the public not to light fires or light barbecues in any national parks, nature reserves or nature in general. We urge the public to exercise caution and report any fire without delay.
Three units responded to a fire in Ravenwood Sunday night. Crews arrived at 03:54 a.m. on Monday and extinguished the fire. Firefighters attended a fire at Raven Wood later at 2.40pm. Firefighters were called out three times to fires on Sunday night and Monday at Raven Wood, located near Curacao Beach on the south-east coast.
The nature reserve, owned by the NPWS, is a critical sanctuary for many of Ireland's bird species. The start of summer is a critical time for wildlife, especially birds and mammals that are now raising their young. So please be careful.
