New Delhi: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the Digital Data Protection Bill passed by the Parliament has received the President's approval.
With this, the bill officially became the law of the land. The purpose of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act is to protect the privacy of the people of India.
The law provides for a fine of up to Rs 250 crore for misusing people's personal information and failing to protect it.
Internet-based services operating in the country are bound to comply with this law. In the event of a data breach, the Data Protection Board and affected individuals must be notified in a timely manner.
The Rajya Sabha passed the bill on August 9, which was approved by the Lok Sabha on August 7. The new law approved by the President will be implemented in ten months. Organizations can handle and collect personal information of people in India only in accordance with the provisions of this Act.
The new law recognizes the right of individuals to have their personal data protected and allows government agencies to use personal data, including for legal purposes.
Under the law, affected individuals can approach the court and seek compensation in matters such as information leakage and misuse of personal information.
