Rajiv Gandhi is also known as the architect of 21st century India. Rajiv was not very interested in the politics of the Nehru family. But with the death of his brother Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv entered the public arena. On 31 October 1984, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was fired upon by Sikh bodyguards enraged by the military action at the Golden Temple, and the Congress leadership nominated Rajiv for the post of Prime Minister.
From 1981 to 1991, Rajiv's political career lasted only for 10 years. Meanwhile, he became the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition. The grandson of India's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru was sworn in as the youngest Prime Minister in India's history on 31 October 1984.
In the 1984 general elections, Rajiv brought the Indian National Congress to power with the largest majority the Indian Parliament had ever seen. Congress won 404 seats out of 491 contested. Many innovative projects were implemented in India under the leadership of Rajiv. New ideas were implemented in the field of education and technology. Rajiv also took care to improve relations with the US. It was under the leadership of Rajiv that India intervened militarily in the internal problems in the neighboring countries of Maldives and Sri Lanka. The 1987 Bofors controversy cast a dark shadow over his political career.
Rajiv remained the Congress president till the 1991 general elections. Rajiv faced the election with the confidence that he could regain the power he had given up. Rajiv and the Congress ran a strong nationwide campaign.
A huge crowd awaited Rajeev who came to Sriperumbathur for election campaign. A crowd that overshadows the security systems. Rajeev greeted them and proceeded. Meanwhile, a woman in her thirties came forward from the crowd with a necklace in her hand. But a police constable named Anasuya who was there stopped them. But Rajiv stopped Anasuya and asked her to allow the woman to cross the fence and come forward. The woman came near and put a garland around Rajeev's neck. Then he bowed down to touch his feet. In the next moment, Rajeev and 14 people who were nearby were scattered with a terrible sound. Rajiv Gandhi was killed in an assassination attempt by the LTTE.
