Video-sharing platform TikTok has announced that it has shut down accounts, in Ireland

Video-sharing platform TikTok has announced that it has shut down accounts, after discovering a covert influence operation targeting Ireland. The report also stated that they hyper-posted comments with similar low-quality content in an attempt to redirect TikTok users off the platform and inflame social tension. Covert influence operations in Russia, Poland and Germany are said to have been discovered and shut down.

This informational network had 72 accounts and over 94,000 followers. TikTok said the accounts' operators posted divisive views to fuel social discord.

The details are contained in a report submitted by TikTok to the European Commission as part of the EU code of practice on disinformation. The submission pertains to the period from January 2023 to June 2023. "The individuals behind this network created authentic accounts and posted content with divisive views related to nationalism in Ireland, Japan, Russia and Taiwan," Tik Tok said.

TikTok, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Instagram parent Meta all voluntarily signed up to the EU disinformation code last year, but Twitter, now known as X, dropped out after Elon Musk bought the platform. The EU described X as the biggest source of fake news and asked Musk to comply with new EU rules aimed at combating disinformation. "X is the platform with the largest proportion of false or misleading posts," European Commission Vice President Vera Jorova previously said.
