24 hrs National Slow Down Day Note : Be Aware | Reduce speed Avoid accidents
07:00hrs on Friday 19th April 2024 to 07:00hrs on Saturday 20th April 2024
• 24 hour road safety speed initiative
• Adjust your speed to all the prevailing road, weather and traffic conditions
An Garda SÃochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are urging motorists to reduce their speed and be mindful of vulnerable road users ahead of ‘Slow Down Day’, a national speed enforcement operation for a 24 hour period
The aim of "Slow Down Day", supported by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), is to remind drivers of road hazards, increase adherence to speed limits, encourage safe driving behavior among motorists and encourage all of society to work to help prevent road traffic collisions and ultimately keep communities safe. The overall goal is to reduce the number of speed-related collisions, saving lives and reducing injuries on the roads.
'Slow Down Day' is part of a wider strategic plan by Ireland's police force Gardaà to improve driving behaviour and promote safer driving practices in an effort to reduce speeding, as Gardai go out nationwide each day to detect and prevent speeding and other road traffic offences.
The operation will focus on speed enforcement across Ireland's road network. Gardaà used print media and social media platforms to spread the important and life-saving message of safe driving.
In 2024 Just four months *63 people have already been killed on Ireland's roads. That is 14 lives more than the same day last year. This is a worryingly high number and road users must prevent the number from rising further by working together to stay safe.
Ahead of Friday's National Slow Down Day, gardaà are urging management and supervisors working at public and private sector fleet operators to talk to their drivers about obeying speed limits.
Gardai are calling on all local authorities, government departments, businesses, schools and third level organizations across the country to support Friday's action and help gardaà to spread the message to staff and customers to slow down when driving.
