New Delhi: The central government has announced free treatment for all citizens above 70 years of age.
The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was announced in the Union Budget that around 4.5 crore families with 6 crore senior citizens will get free health insurance cover worth Rs 5 lakh. Eligible senior citizens will be issued a separate insurance card.
Senior citizens aged 70 years and above in families covered under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana will have an additional top-up cover of up to Rs five lakh per annum. The benefit of Rs 5 Lakh is not to be shared with other members of the family.
Senior citizens aged 70 years and above who are members of other public health insurance schemes like CGHS, ECHS for ex-servicemen and CAPF can continue in them or ABPMJ. You can also switch to A.Y. Members of private health insurance policies, Employees' State Insurance Scheme etc. are also eligible for the new scheme.
The Union Cabinet has approved the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) scheme to provide health care coverage up to Rs 5 lakh without any socioeconomic limit.
