Ashtami, Navami and Dashami are important days in Navratri celebrations in Kerala. These days are known as Durgashtami, Mahanavami and Vijayadashami. Durga is specially worshiped on Ashtami, Mahalakshmi on Navami and Mahasaraswati on Dashami. Lord Rama worshiped the goddess on all the nine Navratri days to gather strength to kill Ravana.
It is believed that after worshiping all the nine aspects of the Goddess, Rama became omnipotent on the tenth day and gained the power to defeat Ravana. On this day, the ritual of burning the effigy of Ravana is observed in North India to commemorate the story of Rama. On the day of Mahanavami, weapons are placed in front of the goddess for puja to gain the goddess's favor through karma. On that day, without doing any work, the tools are offered in front of the goddess.
Weapon Pooja is a very important part of Navratri. It is a feature of our culture. Whatever tool you use, it must be primed before starting work. The tiller tills the plow and starts his work. Similarly, we start reading after saluting the book. All types of work are pooja for weapons, weapon pooja. There is no distinction between art, agriculture, science, industry and war.Approach all the tools we use in our daily life with gratitude and respect. It is believed that if there is no love and devotion in the mind, they will not be useful. The mind of the device is cool and gives the desired results to use them.
The Pandavas used to hide all their weapons in the trunk of a large banyan tree during their exile. It was this Vanni tree that protected them during their twelve year stay in the forest. The Pandavas used to pray to Goddess Durga daily for their salvation. They received the blessings of the goddess.
When the forest stay was over, all the weapons that were in the tree pot were taken and worshiped on that tree. He worshiped the goddess for nine days and took back his weapons on Dashaminal, thinking of her as Vanadurga, the one who subdues evil and gives victory to good.
As they performed the puja with weapons on Navratri day, it came to be known as Armuda Puja. Navratri is also known as Vijaynavaratri, Vanninavaratri and Durganavaratri. As a part of this ritual, even today, the weapon puja is performed and Navratri is celebrated
