Kolkata Law Student Rape Case: Arrests Made Amid Outrage and Political Backlash

Kolkata, June 27 — In a deeply disturbing incident, a female law student from South Calcutta Law College has alleged that she was gang-raped on campus by a former student and two staff members. The assault reportedly took place on the evening of June 25 within the college premises in the Kasba area of Kolkata. All three accused have since been arrested.

According to the police, the incident occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm, and a formal complaint was lodged late on Thursday night. Officers from Kasba Police Station acted swiftly and apprehended the three accused — Manojit Mishra (31), a former student, Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) — in connection with the case. Mobile phones of all three have been seized as part of the investigation.

Police sources confirmed that Manojit and Zaib were taken into custody on Wednesday, while Pramit was arrested from his residence on Friday. The accused were produced before a magistrate at Alipore Court on Friday and were remanded to police custody until July 1.

Speaking to the media, Noyna Chatterjee, Vice Principal of the college, confirmed that Manojit, though a former student, had been temporarily appointed to a staff position by the institution's governing body. She emphasized that the governing body’s president was immediately informed once the incident came to light, and she urged authorities to ensure exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.

Political Repercussions and BJP’s Response

The incident has sparked a sharp political backlash, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launching an attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. BJP leaders alleged that under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration, the state has witnessed a steep decline in women’s safety.

“Rapes have become a daily horror in West Bengal, and the state machinery continues to fail its daughters. The BJP will not remain silent — we are committed to dismantling the culture of impunity that has flourished under the TMC,” the party said in an official statement.

Taking to social media platform X, BJP national spokesperson Amit Malviya condemned the incident as “horrific” and alleged, citing reports, that an individual associated with TMC may also be linked to the case.

“The horror of the RG Kar Medical College case hasn’t faded, and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal,” Malviya posted. “Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women. Rape has turned into a routine tragedy.”

He further stated that the BJP stands firmly with the survivor and her family, and vowed that the party will “not rest until every culprit is brought to justice.”

Echoes of Past Tragedy

The latest incident comes less than a year after another high-profile sexual assault case that rocked the state. In August 2024, a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The victim’s body was discovered in a seminar hall in the early hours of August 9, triggering widespread protests across the state’s medical community.

Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested the following day and was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime.

The recurrence of such incidents has reignited public debate on institutional safety, governance accountability, and the need for urgent reforms in campus security and women's protection in the state.

The investigation into the Kasba case is ongoing.
