New Delhi, India: Bangladesh ’s Chief Adviser and Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus announced plans on Sunday to seek the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina , who fled to India following the ousting of her Awami League government in August.
Speaking during a televised address marking the 100th day of his interim administration, Yunus vowed to deliver justice for the violence that unfolded during the July-August revolution. "We will ensure justice for every killing during the revolution," Yunus declared. "Efforts to prosecute those responsible are progressing well, and we will demand Hasina’s return from India to hold her accountable."The Awami League regime, led by Sheikh Hasina, was toppled on August 5 following mass protests sparked by a quota reform campaign organized by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement. The student-led demonstrations quickly escalated into a nationwide uprising. Amid growing unrest and allegations of violent crackdowns, Hasina fled Bangladesh in secrecy and sought refuge in India. Three days later, Professor Muhammad Yunus was appointed Chief Adviser of the interim government. Since then, the government has accused Hasina and her party leaders of ordering the brutal suppression of protests, resulting in what it calls "crimes against humanity and genocide."
A week ago, Law Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul announced that the government would seek Interpol’s assistance to issue a Red Notice against Hasina and other fugitives."No matter where in the world these fugitive fascists are hiding, they will be brought back and held accountable in court," Nazrul said.
